Most of the confusion about AI answers and traffic comes from using one word for three events. They happen in different places, they are worth different things, and they leave different traces.

A mention is your business named in the text of the answer. For invoicing, small agencies often use X or Y. The reader sees your name. There may be no source attached to it at all, and when there is one, it may not be yours.

A citation is one of your pages shown as a source for the answer — a chip under a sentence, a numbered footnote, a card in a sources panel. The reader may never look at it. A citation can also come without a mention: your guide on choosing an accountant gets cited in an answer that recommends three other firms.

A link is a citation the reader can click and that leads to your site. Google describes AI ModeGoogle's conversational search surface: you ask, it answers, and the next question continues the same thread. as answering with links to supporting websites, and Perplexity’s source chips open the page they name. The link is the only one of the three that can produce a visit you can see.

What the reader sees Can it bring a visit? Where it leaves a trace
Mention Your name in the answer Not directly Only in the answer text
Citation Your page as a source Only if it is a link Some platform reports
Link A clickable source Yes, if clicked Analytics, Search Console

The three combine in every way. Named and cited is the strongest position. Named and not cited is common in chat answers that come from what the model already knows. Cited and not named is common in informational answers where your page explained something and a competitor got the recommendation.

The general picture of what being named means, and why it is measured as a share rather than a rank, is in what AI visibility is.

What is each one worth?

A mention is worth the most to a buyer and the least to your analytics. The person asked who to use and got a short list with your name on it. That is the moment a shortlist forms, and it happens entirely on someone else’s screen.

A citation is worth trust before it is worth traffic. It tells you which of your pages a system leaned on, and it puts your domain in front of the reader as the place a fact came from. It does not mean the sentence next to it says anything about you, or even that the page fully supports that sentence. An audit of four generative search engines, published in 2023, found that only about half of their generated sentences were fully supported by the citations attached to them, and about a quarter of citations did not support the sentence they were attached to (Liu, Zhang and Liang, 2023). The systems have changed since, but the lesson holds: a citation is a pointer, not a quote.

A link is worth a visit, sometimes. The click happens when the answer was not enough — the reader wants the price list, the booking form, the detail the summary left out. When the answer is complete, the link sits there unclicked, and it was still useful to you: your domain was on screen as a source.

Myth.

A citation means the assistant recommended you. It means a page of yours was used to write the answer. Whether the answer then named you is a separate question, and the one a buyer cares about.

The practical consequence is that the three need separate columns in any record you keep. A report that merges them into one “AI presence” number cannot tell you whether to work on being named or on being the source.

Does a citation bring you traffic?

Some, from the citations that are links, when the answer leaves the reader a reason to click. For most businesses that is a small number next to ordinary search, and it moves slower than the mentions do.

Three things keep the visible part small.

The answer is the destination. An AI answer is built to settle the question on the page. A reader who asked what does a VAT return cost for a sole trader and got a range has what they came for. Your page made the answer possible and receives nothing measurable for it.

Sources compete with each other. An answer often lists several sources, and the reader clicks at most one or two. Being one of the sources is not the same as being the one that gets opened.

Many answers carry no sources. When a chat assistant answers from what the model already knows rather than from a fresh search, there may be nothing to click at all. A mention in that answer can only reach you the long way round.

Google’s own guidance on AI features makes a related point from the other side: it describes clicks from results pages with AI OverviewsGoogle's generated summaries above the ordinary results. They name the sources they used, which makes them the one surface where citations are visible. as higher quality, with visitors more likely to spend longer on the site. It publishes no figures for this, so treat it as a description of direction, not of size. Read together, the expectation is fewer clicks, from readers who already know what they want.

Why traffic numbers lag mentions

Because most of the effect of a mention arrives later, by another route, and without a label. The reader sees your name, closes the chat, and comes back to you through a channel your analytics already knows.

The common path looks like this:

Named in answer Remembered Searched by name Visit
A mention usually reaches your site through a branded search or a typed address, days later, recorded as search or direct traffic.

Each step loses the connection to the step before it.

Branded search. The reader types your name into Google the next day. Search Console records a branded query and a click. Nothing in that record says an assistant put the name in their head.

Direct visits. The reader types your address, or follows a link shared in a message. Analytics records direct traffic with no referrer.

App clicks without a referrer. Even a clicked link from an assistant’s app can arrive without referrer information, depending on the app and the browser, and land in the same direct bucket.

Delay. Buying decisions take days or weeks. A mention this month can be a visit next month and a sale the month after, by which time no report connects them.

So a period in which you started being named more often will usually show up first, if at all, as slow growth in branded searches and direct visits — not as a new referral line. That is also why a short test, a few weeks long, of “did AI traffic go up” tells you very little in either direction.

Ask this in ChatGPT

Which companies would you recommend for [your service] for a business like mine, and where does that information come from?

Ask in a fresh chat. Note whether your name appears, and separately whether any of your pages appear as a source.

How to see citations in your analytics

Partly, and in different places for different surfaces. No single report shows mentions, and only some show citations.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s documentation on AI features and your website says traffic from these features is included in Search Console’s Performance report, under the Web search type. There is no separate filter. Search Console’s help page on how the report counts data adds the detail: a click on an external link in an AI Overview or in AI Mode counts as a click, an AI Overview takes a single position and all its links share it, and a follow-up question in AI Mode counts as a new query. In practice, a page cited in an Overview shows up as impressions and clicks mixed in with its ordinary results.

Microsoft Copilot and Bing. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, announced as a public preview in February 2026, that counts how often your pages are cited as sources in Copilot, in Bing’s AI-generated summaries and in some partner integrations (Bing Webmaster Blog). It shows total citations, cited pages and a sample of the queries used to retrieve them. It is a citation report, not a traffic report, and Microsoft notes that the counts say nothing about a page’s placement or role within an answer. It is the closest thing available to a direct citation count.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini apps. No platform report of citations. What you can see is the click, when there is one: a referral visit from the assistant’s domain in your analytics. OpenAI’s crawlerA program that fetches pages for a search engine or an assistant. Block one and you leave what it can quote. documentation says that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, so blocking that crawler removes the chance of a ChatGPT search citation in the first place.

Checklist

Setting up a view of AI referrals

None of this shows mentions. A mention without a link is visible only in the answer text, which is why the answers have to be asked and kept — the recording method is laid out in how to track brand visibility in Google AI Mode, and it works the same for any assistant.

What should you count instead of visits?

Count mentions and citations from the answers themselves, and read traffic next to them as a lagging signal. Each measure answers a different question.

Share of answers that named you. Per question type, per assistant, across repeated asks. This is the headline, because it is the event the buyer experiences.

Share of answers that cited one of your pages. Recorded separately from the first. The two together tell you which of the four positions you are in: named and cited, named only, cited only, or neither.

Which page was cited. Not just the domain. A citation of a blog post you wrote three years ago and a citation of your pricing page are different results with different follow-up.

Who was named instead. When you were cited and not named, the businesses that were named are the ones the answer preferred on the same evidence. That is the most useful line in the record.

Traffic, as context. Referral visits from the assistants, branded search clicks and direct visits, watched over months. If mentions rise and these stay flat for a quarter, that is worth asking about. If they stay flat for three weeks, it is not.

Watch out.

Do not add mentions from different assistants into one figure. They name different businesses for the same question, so a combined number hides the assistant you are missing from. Report one number per assistant.

Why assistants disagree with each other is covered in Gemini and Claude visibility. How the question set and repeats are designed for a measurement like this is set out in the method.

What to do with an uncited mention

Make one page of yours the obvious source for the fact the answer stated about you, and check the sources the answer did rely on. An uncited mention means a system has an opinion about you and you cannot see where it came from.

Start with what the answer actually said.

Is it correct? An uncited mention can carry an old price, a service you stopped offering or the wrong city. If it is wrong, the fix starts on your own site and on the directories that describe you, because that is where the statement most likely came from.

Is there a page of yours that states it plainly? If the answer says you specialise in something, there should be a page that says so in its first two sentences, in the words a buyer uses. A page whose answer is in paragraph four is hard to cite even when it is right.

What did similar answers cite? Ask the same question on a surface that shows sources — Perplexity or Google’s AI features. The pages cited there are a reasonable guess at what the uncited answer was built from. If you are named on those pages, check the description matches yours. If you are not on them, that is the work list. Working through such a list is the subject of Perplexity optimization.

Is the page reachable? If the assistants’ search crawlers are blocked, your pages cannot be retrieved and cannot be cited, however good they are.

The opposite case — cited but not named — needs the opposite work. Your page was good enough to quote and your business was not the recommendation. Usually the page explains a topic well and says little about who you are, what you sell and for whom. The full order of that work is in how to improve AI visibility.

An illustrative example

The figures below are illustrative. They show how the same business can look like a failure in analytics and a success in the answers.

Say a small accounting firm checks its analytics after a quarter of work. Referral visits from assistants would be a few dozen a month, roughly where they started. On that number alone, the work would look like it did nothing.

Say the recorded answers tell a different story. Across buying questions on one assistant, the firm would be named in a third of answers, up from a tenth. Cited in far fewer — most of the answers naming it come with no sources at all.

What the other lines would show. Branded search clicks in Search Console would be drifting up over the same months, slowly, with no single jump. Direct visits would be up a little. Neither would carry a label saying why.

What that would mean. The mentions are reaching buyers, and buyers are arriving by typing the name rather than clicking a source. The referral line would be the wrong place to look.

What the next step would be. For the price questions, where the firm is named without a source, publish the price ranges on one page, answered in the first two sentences, so there is something to cite next time.

What a report must not claim. That the work caused the branded search growth. It can say what changed, when, and what moved after.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between a mention and a citation in an AI answer? A mention is your business named in the answer text. A citation is one of your pages listed as a source. You can have either without the other.

Do AI citations bring traffic? Some, when the citation is a link and the reader clicks it. Most answers settle the question on the page, and much of the effect arrives later as branded searches and direct visits.

Can I see AI citations in Google Search Console? Partly. AI Overview and AI Mode clicks and impressions are counted inside the Web search type, with no separate filter, so they are mixed with ordinary results.

Is a citation without a mention worth anything? Yes, as evidence that a system trusts your page on the topic. It becomes worth more once the page also says plainly who you are and what you offer.

Where to start

Ask your three most valuable buying questions in two assistants today. For each answer, write down two things in two columns: were you named, and was any page of yours a source. Then open Search Console and look at branded search clicks over the last six months.

Those three columns — named, cited, branded searches — are a better picture of what AI answers are doing for you than any referral report on its own.

Questions

What is the difference between a mention and a citation in an AI answer?
A mention is your business named in the answer text. A citation is one of your pages listed as a source for the answer. You can be mentioned without being cited, cited without being mentioned, or both.
Do AI citations bring traffic?
Some, when the citation is a link and the reader clicks it. Most answers settle the question on the page, so the visible click is a small part of the effect. Much of the rest arrives later as branded searches and direct visits that analytics cannot attribute.
Can I see AI citations in Google Search Console?
Partly. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the Web search type of the Performance report, but there is no separate filter, so you cannot tell them apart from ordinary results.

Does ranking first in Google mean an assistant will name you?

Ranking helps, but less than most site owners expect. A first-page position makes your pages easier to find for the assistants that search Google, and it means your site already does the basic work every engine needs. It does not decide the name in the answer: assistants rewrite the buyer's question into their own searches, several run their own crawlers, some answer from memory without searching, and the answer rests on what other sites say about you as much as on your own pages.

How to track brand visibility in Google AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's conversational search surface, and it is not covered by rank tracking and only partly by Search Console. Tracking it means asking the buying questions yourself, repeatedly, and recording whether you were named, who was named instead, and what was cited.

    AI search optimization

AI search optimization is the work of becoming one of the names an assistant gives when someone asks it for a recommendation. It overlaps with SEO, because assistants read the open web, but the target is a share of answers rather than a ranking, and an answer is assembled from several descriptions of you at once rather than from your homepage alone. You measure first, find the question types you are absent from, and start with your own pages.
